Figure 3. Present distribution of forests (in black) in the states of Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan. These areas of extensive forest probably serve the U.S. Midwest as "source areas" for migratory songbirds. The large source woods are in south-central Indiana, south-east Missouri, and northern Wisconsin.
