HUMAN RESPONSE TO GLOBAL CHANGE PROGRAM
Item #d88jul22
International social
scientists are assembling a Human Response to Global Change Program (HRGCP),
with the intention of complementing the already established International
Geosphere-Biosphere Program. International working meetings have been held in
Sweden, Argentina and Warsaw this year, but the program is still in the
formative stages. Peter Timmerman, of the HRGCP Secretariat in Toronto,
explained this is the case mainly because a well-organized community does not
exist for social scientists, as it does for the physical and life sciences
composing the IGBP. A preliminary working symposium of about 50 individuals is
planned in Tokyo for late September, and will include a mix of IGBP scientists
with interests in the social sciences. While worldwide involvement of all
interested parties in HRGCP is clearly the ultimate goal, Timmerman said what is
needed most at this stage is a flood of ideas, not people, and background papers
for discussion at the Tokyo meeting are welcome. Identification of interested
members of the international community is also necessary, and there will
probably be a second symposium in 1990 involving a larger group to formulate
detailed program plans. The HRGCP Secretariat resides at Timmerman's office at
the International Federation of Institutes for Advanced Study, 39 Spadina Road,
Toronto, Ontario M5R 2S9, Canada; 416-926-7570.
