A Guide to Information on Greenhouse Gases and Ozone Depletion
Published July 1988 through June 1999

Item #d89jan5

A diverse group of over 600 attended the Second North American Conference on Climate Change: A Cooperative Approach, organized by the Climate Institute, in Washington last month. Considered the most comprehensive meeting yet on the likely implications and potential societal responses to global change, the meeting focused on seven geographic regions of North America from the Caribbean to the Arctic. The conference proceedings will be available in April 1989.

Climate Institute president John C. Topping Jr. announced future meeting plans. A World Conference on Preparing for Climate Change, to be held in Cairo in December of 1989, will examine implications for all regions of the earth, emphasizing the stake Third World countries have in preparing for change and the potential role their governments have in making a positive response. More limited in scope will be Implications of Climate Change for Africa (May 3-5, 1989, Washington), to assess the vulnerability of African agriculture and the implications of sea level rise for coastal areas. Implications of Climate Change for Island Nations (April 3-6, 1990, Hawaii) will examine effects on small nations such as the Maldives, and on coastal areas of large ones such as Japan. Direct inquiries to the Climate Institute concerning attendance: 316 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, S. 403, Washington DC 20003 (202-547-0104). A quarterly newsletter is issued by the Institute (see PERIODICALS, this Global Climate Change Digest issue--Jan. 1989).
