Following are reports that have been issued by the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme: A Study of Global Change (IGBP); several more are in preparation. This major, transdisciplinary program was prompted by four considerations: 1) a growing realization that biotic and non-biotic components of the biosphere are inextricably linked; 2) human impacts on the earth system are now comparable to natural interactive processes; 3) an appreciation of the limits to habitability of the earth, and 4) advances in technology and science make possible study of the earth as an interactive system. IGBP objectives are to describe and understand the interactive processes that regulate the earth as a system, the environment it provides for life, changes that are occurring and the influence of humans. Priority is given to topics that will most likely lead to prediction of global change on time scales of decades to centuries. Request reports from the IGBP Secretariat, Royal Swedish Acad. The International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme: A Study of Global Change (IGBP)--A Plan for Action (Rep. No. 4), 200 pp., Aug. 1988. A detailed program description, prepared by the Special Committee for discussion by the IGBP Scientific Advisory Council in October 1988, proposing activities and an action plan for each of four research components (terrestrial biosphere-atmospheric chemistry interaction, marine biosphere-atmosphere interactions, biospheric aspects of the hydrological cycle, effects of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems). Common problems relating to the four working group topics are discussed (global geosphere-biosphere modeling, data management and information systems, techniques for extracting environmental data of the past, geosphere-biosphere observatories). Also covers financing and interaction with existing international programs and includes extensive reference material such as namelists, committees and the IGBP constitution.

Global Changes of the Past (Rep. No. 6), H. Oeschger, J.A. Eddy, 39 pp., 1989. Report of a meeting of the Working Group on Techniques for Extracting Environmental Data from the Past (Berne, Switzerland, July 1988). Gives background and needed field work, laboratory techniques and data interpretation on several topics recommended for emphasis, such as paleo records of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, global changes in the Holocene, and needs in ocean and terrestrial data.
