REACTION TO EPA POLICY REPORT

A subcommittee of the Science Advisory Board (SAB) of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has completed its review of the agency's recently released draft report Policy Options for Stabilizing Global Climate. (See Global Climate Change Digest, NEWS, Apr. 1989.) According to an article in Greenhouse Effects Report (p. 29, Apr.) the Global Climate Change Subcommittee, chaired by Warner North of Decision Focus Inc., recommended that EPA include cost estimates for the policy options outlined. It commended EPA's contributions on a difficult topic, but feels the report does not yet address the explicit mandate from Congress to suggest policies that will stabilize climate change. The subcommittee assessment will be available soon from the SAB staff office (A101F, U.S. EPA, Washington DC 20460; 202-382-2552). Recent articles on the policy report itself appeared in Science (pp. 1544-1545, Mar. 24, 1989) and Chem. Eng. News (pp. 22-23, Mar. 27).

A similar response from Congressional Representative Phil Sharp, a Democrat from Indiana who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee, was reported by Inside EPA (p. 4, Apr. 21). Sharp has urged EPA to issue a follow-up report containing cost and implementation information on alternative policies.
