Report from the First Meeting of the Scientific Advisory Council for the IGBP.

<193>Vol. I (Rep. No. 7:2), 135 pp., 1989. This advisory workshop (Stockholm, Oct. 1988) was attended by 174 participants representing 37 countries and 50 other organizations. It reached 14 general conclusions on program development which build on the general plan described in IGBP Report No. 4. This volume contains meeting minutes; plenary presentations (on the roles of the national committees, interaction with other international programs, human dimensions of global change); and 13 discussion group reports on specific topics (such as effects of climate changes in terrestrial ecosystems, third world cooperation in IGBP, data and information systems).

<193>Vol. II (Rep. No. 7:2), 206 pp., 1989. Contains reports on planning meetings of national committees in 23 participating countries, and 22 reports by bodies of the ICSU (International Council of Scientific Unions) and other international organizations.

Pilot Studies for Remote Sensing and Data Management (Rep. No. 8), S.I. Rasool, D.S. Ojima, Eds., 41 pp., May 1989. The Working Group on Data and Information Systems met January 1989 in Geneva and proposed several initial projects. The Land-Cover Change Pilot Study would combine ground data with observations from several satellites, for sites of different climatic and land cover character, with the goal of estimating the unbiased fraction of each category of land cover even when land-use information varies within a pixel. The other projects involve manipulation of existing data. They include preparation of an easily accessible collection of satellite imagery of vegetation in several spectral bands; development of methods for testing the consistency of satellite observations of several types, such as surface temperature; and development of a universal inventory of large-scale data useful for global change studies, to guide researchers.

Southern Hemisphere Perspectives of Global Change (Rep. No. 9), B.H. Walker, R.G. Dickson, Eds., 54 pp., May 1989. Recognizing that all but one of the 19-member Special Committee of the IGBP reside in the Northern Hemisphere, but the Southern Hemisphere is equally subject to potential climate change, a special workshop was organized in Mbabane, Swaziland, Dec. 1988. Symposium presentations will be published in a special edition of the journal Climate Change; this report presents the findings of seven working groups which followed the meeting, and includes proposed collaborative research. Topics are Southern Hemisphere environments and change in global climate; Southern Hemisphere contributions to the IGBP; developing regional climate scenarios; effects of climate and man on agricultural systems; marine and coastal ecosystems and resources; hydrological responses to long-term climatic change.
