Derives the abundance of CO from sets of infrared solar spectra recorded from an altitude of 3.58 km in 1950-1951 and 1985-1987. Found the mean cumulative rate of increase of the total column abundance of CO above the Jungfraujoch Station to be (0.85 <F128>æ<F14> 0.20)% yr<M >-1<D> between the two periods. The present findings are compared with trends reported in earlier studies.

Reevaluates the increase of the vertical column abundance of CH4 over the station in 1951, 1975 and in 1984-1987. The mean cumulative rate of increase of the total vertical column abundance of CH4 was found to be (0.7 <F128>æ<F14> 0.1)% yr<M^>-1<D> between 1951 and 1986. Deduced that the volume mixing ratios at the altitude of the station were 1.28 <F128>æ<F14> 0.08 and 1.64 <F128>æ<F14> 0.09 ppm for 1951 and for 1985-1987, respectively.

Shows that a change of one year in the starting point of the averaging done in generating a multiyear-average sequence can make a dramatic difference in the appearance of the sequence, even determining whether the apparent trend is upward or downward. Presents historical sea-ice data from Iceland to illustrate with a long-term climate data set the misrepresentation of climate statistics possible through selective multiyear averaging.

"Global Marine Temperature Variation and the Solar Magnetic Cycle," N.E. Newell (45 Jason St., Arlington MA 02174), R.E. Newell et al., Geophys. Res. Lett., 16(4), 311-314, Apr. 1989.

Uses harmonic analysis to study global and hemispheric marine temperatures for 1985-1986. Found a prominent 22-year peak which may be related to the solar magnetic cycle. The low frequency data show a major dip centered around the period 1905-1910. These results should be considered in any analysis of global marine temperature trends.

Reports results of spectroscopic total column measurements of CO and CH4 at different points in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres from 1970-1985. Found an increase in the Northern Hemisphere of 1.5-2% per year and 1.2% per year for CO and CH4, respectively. An increasing rate was not detected in the Southern Hemisphere.
