A Guide to Information on Greenhouse Gases and Ozone Depletion
Published July 1988 through June 1999

Item #d89oct5

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has funded a new, interdisciplinary Center for Global Change at the University of Maryland with a two-year, $1.8 million grant. The Center will combine research and policy analysis with education on topics such as future international climate protection agreements, substitutes for chlorofluorocarbons, sea level rise, effects of ozone depletion on agriculture, and improving communication among government, industry, and developing and industrialized countries.

The new interdisciplinary Global Environmental Studies Center at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory will coordinate all such Department of Energy research there, and will draw on outside talents as well for national and international collaborative work. Topics will include policy, data and model systems, measurement science and instrumentation, large-scale environmental studies and global systems analysis. In August 1989 the Center conducted a workshop on decision making and conflict resolution in response to climate change.

The U.S. EPA has also funded an environmental consulting firm (ICF Inc., Fairfax, Virginia) to study global climate change and assist the agency in formulating international mitigation strategies. The three-year, $37 million contract will focus on ozone depletion and greenhouse warming.
