SECOND IPCC MEETING IN NAIROBI
Item #d89sep4
Participants at the late June 1989
general meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change agreed that
reports of the three working groups should be completed by May 1990. This will
allow time for formal governmental reviews prior to a final IPCC meeting in
September, completing IPCC work in time for presentation at the Second World
Climate Conference in November. At the Nairobi meeting, Saudi Arabia presented a
report on behalf of several developing countries expressing concern over their
IPCC participation, and the need for financial and other assistance to raise
concern in their countries and develop competence for dealing with climate
change. Another outcome of the meeting was elimination of "core membership,"
which means IPCC participation is available to all countries and
non-governmental organizations on equal footing. This and other IPCC meetings
are covered in the latest (August 1989) issue of IPCC News (Mason
Charak, NCPO/NOAA, 11400 Rockville Pike, Rockville MD 20852; 301-443-8981). A
critical seven-page commentary on the meeting has also been prepared by G.M.
Woodwell and K. Ramakrishna of Woods Hole Research Center (POB 296, Woods Hole
MA 02543; 508-540-9900). See also Intl. Environ. Rptr., pp. 335-336,
July.
