Although ozone concentrations above the Antarctic decreased in October 1989, nearly to the record low levels recorded in 1987, the hole dissipated earlier in the season than it did in 1987 as the stratospheric polar vortex began to break down, mixing in air from higher latitudes. Neither the strong early season vortex, which permitted the hole to develop, nor its early dissipation were expected based on current understanding of an approximate two-year cycle in stratospheric winds. These events indicate that the dynamic influences on ozone depletion are poorly understood. (See Nature, p. 105, Nov. 9, 1989; Eos, p. 1561, Dec. 19.)
