ENVIRONMENT AT THE ECONOMIC SUMMIT
Item #d90jul70
A coalition of U.S.
environmental groups, which will represent over 150 similar organizations
world-wide, is gearing up to apply pressure to the participants of the 1990 Economic
Summit of Industrial Nations ("G-7"), to be held July 9-11 in
Houston, Texas. It is calling for a six-point plan that includes global warming,
biodiversity and other topics. In addition, The Other Economic Summit
(TOES), an international forum to explore the environmental and social
dimensions of world economics that the G-7 summit will not address, is planned
in Houston for July 6-8. TOES has attracted growing numbers of participants and
attention since its inception in Britain in 1984. "Energy and the
Environment" is one of the planned workshops. For information contact TOES,
1442 Harvard St. NW, Washington DC 20009.
"Environmental Groups to Hold G-7 Leaders Accountable for Past
Environmental Pledges," Intl. Environ. Rptr., p. 247, June 1990.
"Document Implies U.S. Summit Position Will Oppose Greenhouse Gases
Timetable," ibid., pp. 229-230. The internal draft document
distributed to high-level federal officials in Washington does, however, support
specific action on sustainable development, ocean protection and forest
preservation.
