SCIENTIST POLL
Item #d90jul72
Sixty-five percent of the scientists responding to a
recent opinion survey believe that a global average warming of at least two
degrees Centigrade over the next 100 years is 50-100 percent likely; 31 percent
feel it is less than 50 percent likely. The poll, conducted by the newsletter
Global Environmental Change Report, is based on over 350 responses from
over 40 countries to the 1,500 questionnaires sent out. Eighty-nine percent felt
that countries should take steps now to reduce carbon dioxide emissions; 76
percent think that human-induced greenhouse warming is already happening, while
only 41 percent believe there is scientific evidence to support this opinion.
Discussion of the survey results and what they imply (or do not imply) are
reported in the May 11, 1990, issue of the newsletter. (Cutter Info. Corp., 37
