WORLD LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE
Item #d90jun91
Over 200 parliamentarians from 42
nations issued a Declaration of Environmental Interdependence at a
three-day Washington gathering in early May 1990, sponsored by the U.S. Senate,
which addressed climate change, ozone depletion, deforestation, sustainable
development, population control and biological diversity. The nonbinding
agreement calls for a 50-percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions within 20
years, a global plan for helping the developing world reduce emissions and
implement sustainable development, strengthening of the Montreal Protocol on
ozone-depleting substances, and other measures. For information contact the
office of Senator Albert Gore, one of the main organizers. See also Greenhouse
Effect Rep., p. 36, May 1990; Intl. Environ. Rptr., pp. 195-196,
