Item #d90may66
The U.S. Department of Energy has published an
interim report for public comment on its national energy strategy, which has
been under development since early 1989. Energy Secretary James Watkins
announced that the report is not a first draft of the strategy, but consists
largely of input gathered at a series of public hearings around the country.
Energy efficiency and renewable energy sources will be emphasized in the final
plan.
Also released for public comment are five "white papers" prepared
by DOE's national laboratories which address topics important to the strategy:
energy efficiency, renewable energy, global climate change, and technology
transfer. They are independent works of the laboratories and do not represent
DOE policy, but rather provide insight for evaluating divergent views on the
topics.
For details on ordering reports and submitting comments see REPORTS/DOE
DOCUMENTS, this Global Climate Change Digest issue--May 1990. DOE also
recently announced a series of initiatives to increase energy efficiency and the
use of renewable energy sources; see J. Air & Waste Mgmt., pp.
364-365, Mar. 1990.
