Several recent papers, discussed in the following articles and listed in a special section of Professional Publications in this Global Climate Change Digest issue--Apr. 1991, argue against the likelihood of effectively reducing atmospheric CO2 levels by fertilizing high-latitude areas of ocean with iron to stimulate the growth of plankton. A similar view emerged from a February 1991 symposium held by the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography in San Marcos, Calif.
