The second of two parts, the first part having included research summaries. Presents scientific assessments of current understanding of the chemical composition and physical structure of the stratosphere. Among the section topics are: summary of the most recent international assessments of stratospheric ozone; a study of future chlorine and bromine loading of the atmosphere; reviews of photochemical and chemical kinetics data used in atmospheric models; a new assessment of the impact of Space Shuttle launches on the stratosphere; a summary of environmental issues and needed research to evaluate the impact of the newly re-proposed fleet of stratospheric supersonic civil aircraft.

Atlantic Climate Change Program Science Plan (NOAA-CGCP Spec. Rep. 2), Atlantic Climate Change Science Working Group, 29 pp., Apr. 1990. Panels meeting in 1989 at GFDL in Princeton and at Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory developed a program for studying global climate variability related to thermohaline processes in the Atlantic Ocean. Program concepts and recommendations based on modeling, analysis of historical data and field monitoring are described.

Atwood et al., Eds., 31 pp., Dec. 1990. Gives an extensive program plan for the problem, developed by NOAA scientists and academic colleagues at a November 1988 symposium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Includes reports from working groups on air-sea exchange, surface ocean-intermediate/deep ocean exchange, and global monitoring.
