LANDFILL METHANE
Item #d91jul100
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has
proposed regulations to limit emissions of volatile organic compounds from
landfills; this would also control more than half the 10.5 million tons of
methane landfills emit annually. (See Federal Register, May 30, 1991, p.
24468.) EPA has also initiated federal studies on the global warming potential
of methane, as required by the Clean Air Act. According to Inside EPA
(May 24, 1991, p. 8), five reports are planned for completion by September 1992.
They will address natural emissions, U.S. and international emissions, and U.S.
and international control options. Internal and interagency working groups are
being established.
