Rate coefficients measured in the laboratory were used with a semi-empirical model and a 2-D model to calculate steady-state depletion potentials and lifetimes with much greater accuracy than before. Potentials calculated for methyl bromide and dibromomethane respectively are 0.65 and 0.17.

Estimates of the age of stratospheric air were combined with direct measurements of HCFC-22, HCFC-142b, CH3Br, H-1301, H-1211 and H-2402 to estimate their local depletion potentials. The HCFCs are much less efficiently dissociated than CFC-11, lowering their ozone depletion potentials to only 30%-40% of their chlorine loading potentials. However, CH3Br and the Halons are rapidly dissociated.

Made estimates for all 53 possible one- and two-carbon HFCs and HCFCs, and examined relationships among C-H bond strength, activation energy for removal of H by OH, tropospheric lifetime and depletion potentials. Developed algorithms that are easy to apply and accurate enough for initially screening alternative compounds based on environmental considerations.
