"Siberia's Threatened Forests," A. Rosencranz (Pacific Energy &
Resour. Ctr., 1055 Ft. Cronkhite, Sausalito CA 94965), A. Scott, Nature,
355(6358), 293-294, Jan. 23, 1992.
The boreal forests of Siberia provide an important carbon store, comparable
to tropical forests, in addition to forming a natural heritage of international
importance and driving the local and national economies. The importance of these
forests to the global carbon budget must be communicated to the negotiators of
international agreements on greenhouse emissions, and sustainable development
must be encouraged as foreign timber corporations enter into joint venture
agreements with the former Soviet republics.
Item #d92mar12
A communication by M. Benarie (12 Rue de l'Yveline, 91220 Bretigny,
France), Atmos. Environ., 26A(4), 739, 1992, recommends checking
the world laboratory standard for CO2, which unlike other standards is presently
defined by only a single method, to rule out the small likelihood of any
artificial contribution to the apparent global CO2 increase.
Item #d92mar13
"Countermeasures for Mitigating the Effects of Global Environment
Changes," L.M. Jenkins (Johnson Space Ctr., NASA, Houston TX 77058), Space
Power, 10(2), 153-156, 1991.
Space-based countermeasures for mitigating the effects of global
environmental change should be considered in addition to Earth-based actions.
The definition, analysis, demonstration and preparation of such approaches will
provide a ready option for policy response if global change consequences are
severe.
Item #d92mar14
"Health and the Environment: Dangers of Ozone Depletion," F.
Godlee, British Med. J., 303(6813), 1326-1328, 1991.
