Marine Chemistry, 35(1-4), Nov. 1991, comprises 42 reviewed papers based on presentations at the international symposium, Biochemistry and Circulation of Water Masses in the Southern Ocean (July 1990, Brest, France). These papers contribute to understanding the Southern Ocean's role in the CO2 budget and factors limiting primary productivity there. The symposium helped coordinate national plans relating to a new Joint Global Flux Study in the Southern Ocean as part of the IGBP.
