Measurements of major ions in nine sections of a central Greenland ice core show that concentrations of SO42- and NO3- have increased up to three or four times the 18th-century levels, and large changes have also occurred in species such as NH4+, excess Cl, and Ca+. Anthropogenic inputs have clearly modified the behavior of several chemical compounds in the atmosphere.

Data from remote, rural, suburban and urban stations show no dominant region-wide trend over 1978-1988, although there is some common behavior on a subregional scale. The short-term variability evident in this study suggests it may be misleading to draw conclusions concerning long-term trends from records of limited duration.

Nighttime OH concentrations may have decreased significantly between ice-age and preindustrial, and between preindustrial and present times, although daytime concentrations did not vary much during these transitions.
