GENERAL INTEREST--POLICY, SCIENCE AND LAW
Item #d93apr1
Three
comments, and a reply by W.D. Nordhaus, on his article "An
Optimal Transition Path for Controlling Greenhouse Gases,"
by S.H. Schneider; H. Dowlatabadi and L.B. Lave; and M.
Oppenheimer; Science, 259(5100), 1381-1384, Mar. 5,
1993.
Item #d93apr2
"Does Recent Global Warming Suggest an Enhanced Greenhouse
Effect?" H.S. Kheshgi (Exxon Res. & Eng. Co., Annandale
NJ 08801), B.S. White, Clim. Change, 23(2),
121-139, Feb. 1993.
Estimates climate sensitivity to increased greenhouse gases by
assuming models for greenhouse forcing, climate response to
forcing, and climate variability. The estimates of climate
sensitivity are remarkably insensitive to assumptions, but their
statistical significance is sensitive to assumptions about
climate variability. Assuming a variability with a time scale of
a century, consistent with temperature records, the estimate of
sensitivity encompasses both zero and typical values obtained by
GCMs, and implies it will be several decades before confident
estimates can be made.
Item #d93apr3
"The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS): A Mechanism
for Coordinated Representation of Small Island States on Issues
of Common Concern," L.I. Heileman (Inst. Marine Affairs,
Hilltop Lane, Chaguaramas, Trinidad & Tobago, W. Indies), Ambio, 22(1),
55-56, Feb. 1993.
Discusses the position of small island states on the Framework
Convention on Climate Change, and the success to date of AOSIS in
representing their concerns.
Item #d93apr4
Commentary: "Greenhouse Warming," D.J. Evans (Chair,
Panel on Policy Implications of Greenhouse Warming, Natl. Acad.
Sci.), R. Coppock, Environment, 35(1), 2-3,
Jan.-Feb. 1993.
Objects to the conclusion of W. Bach, in his review of the
National Academy of Sciences report Policy Implications of
Greenhouse Warming, that the report finds preventive measures
unjustified because of the capacity for U.S. industry and
agriculture to adapt to warming.
Item #d93apr5
"World Energy Prices, Geopolitics and Global Warming,"
J.A. Laurmann (Marine Sci. Inst., U.C. Santa Barbara, 3372 Martin
Rd., Carmel CA 93923), J. Hydrogen Energy, 17(7),
553-554, 1992. Comment on the importance of focusing research on
the likelihood of costly, early, nonlinear threshold effects of
climate change on ecosystems and human systems.
Item #d93apr6
"Technology Transfer Funds and the Law: Recent Amendments to
the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone
Layer," P. Lawrence, J. Environ. Law, 4(1),
15-27, 1992.
