Estimates climate sensitivity to increased greenhouse gases by
assuming models for greenhouse forcing, climate response to
forcing, and climate variability. The estimates of climate
sensitivity are remarkably insensitive to assumptions, but their
statistical significance is sensitive to assumptions about
climate variability. Assuming a variability with a time scale of
a century, consistent with temperature records, the estimate of
sensitivity encompasses both zero and typical values obtained by
GCMs, and implies it will be several decades before confident
estimates can be made.
