IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE: STORM CHARACTERISTICS
Item #d93dec99
"GCM Response of Northern Winter Stationary Waves and Storm Tracks to
Increasing Amounts of Carbon Dioxide," D.B. Stephenson (Météo-France
CNRM/UDC, 42 Ave. G. Coriolis, 31057 Toulouse, France), I.M. Held, J. Clim.,
6(10), 1859-1870, Oct. 1993.
Experiments with the GFDL coupled ocean-atmosphere model show that the
Atlantic storm track weakens with increasing CO2, while the Pacific storm track
changes little.
Item #d93dec100
"Historical Variations in Weather Disasters: Implications for Climate
Change," S.A. Changnon (Illinois Global Clim. Change Prog., Illinois State
Water Surv., Champaign IL 61820), World Resour. Rev., 5(3), Sep.
1993.
Studied historical variations in 146 major storms during 1950-1990 to
describe their temporal characteristics and possible relationship to climate
changes. Results suggest that a warmer regime over North America would be
associated with a greater incidence of major storms in the U.S.
Item #d93dec101
"Tropical Cyclone Frequencies Inferred from Gray's Yearly Genesis
Parameter: Validation of GCM Tropical Climates," B.F. Ryan (CSIRO, Atmos.
Res., Mordialloc, Vic. 3195, Australia), I.G. Watterson, J.L. Evans, Geophys.
Res. Lett., 19(18), 1831-1834, Sep. 23 1992. (See Global Climate Change Digest, Feb. 1993.)
Item #d93dec102
"Effect of Global Climatic Changes on the Cyclonic Activity in the
Atmosphere," I.I. Mokhov (Inst. Atmos. Phys., USSR Acad. Sci., Moscow V-71,
Russ.), O.I. Mokhov et al., Izvestiya, Atmos. Ocean. Phys., 28(1),
7-18, 1992. (English Ed. of Aug. 1992.)
Estimates expected cyclogenesis changes due to a change atmospheric
temperature on the basis of empirical data in interannual variability
(1962-1986), and evolution during a year.
Item #d93dec103
"On Trends of Atmospheric Cyclogenetic Activity under Global Climate
Changes," I.I. Mokhov (address immed. above), O.I. Mokhov et al, Izv.
Akad. Nauk SSSR Fiz. Atmos. I Okeana, 28(1), 11-26, Jan. 1992. In
Russian.
Examines the generation of cyclones and anticyclones at different latitudes
and over ocean and land, and compares results to model calculations. Obtained
model expressions for cyclogenetic activity, number of eddies, and meridional
eddy transfer of heat and water vapor.
