"Timing and Patterns of Visible Autumn Migration: Can Effects of Global Warming Be Detected?" W. Gatter (Buchsstr. 20, W-7318 Oberlenningen, Ger.), J. Ornithol., 133(4), 427-436, Oct. 1992. In German.

In 1984-1990 67% of passerine short-distance migrant birds passed up to 10 days later in southwest Germany compared to 1970-1976. From 1970 to 1983 weather-related onset of autumn was delayed, and the majority of the migrants seem to have adapted to the later onset. There is no likely explanation for delayed migration other than climatic change.

"Using Montane Mammals to Model Extinctions Due to Global Change," K.A. McDonald (Dept. Biol., Univ. New Mexico, Albuquerque NM 87131), J.H. Brown, Conserv. Biol., 6(3), 409-415, Sep. 1992.

Developed a model that predicts the number and identity of species that would become extinct due to changing climate and vegetation. Results suggest one can make predictions without detailed information about population biology, and that changes seriously threaten species that are restricted in distribution.

Simulates the impact of climatic changes on the annual productivity of black-throated blue warblers in northern hardwood forests. Suggests that the focus of researchers should be on regional studies of the factors influencing avian reproduction and survival.
