FROM VOLUME 6, NUMBER 7-8, JULY-AUGUST 1993
PROFESSIONAL PUBLICATIONS...
GENERAL INTEREST, POLICY, ECONOMICS
Item #d93jul1
Special Issue: "Long-Term
Strategies for Mitigating Global Warming," N. Nakicenovic (IIASA, A-2361
Laxenburg, Austria), A. Grübler et al., Energy, 18(5),
401-609, May 1993.
Reviews technological options for mitigating CO2 emissions,
including efficiency improvements, clean fossil and zero-carbon energy
technologies, carbon sequestration and disposal, enhancement of natural
carbon sinks, and geo-engineering measures to compensate for increases in CO2
emissions. Compares options on the basis of costs, reduction potentials, timing
and other criteria. Discusses methodological issues, and trade-offs and
constraints for implementing mitigation strategies.
Item #d93jul2
"Tropical
Deforestation and Habitat Fragmentation in the Amazon: Satellite Data from 1978
to 1988," D. Skole (Inst. Earth Oceans Space, Univ. New Hampshire, Durham
NH 03824), C. Tucker, Science, 260(5116), 1905-1910, June 25,
1993.
Sets of Landsat images taken one decade apart were used to measure
deforestation, fragmented forest, and edge effects of adjacent deforestation.
Deforestation in the Amazon Basin increased from 78,000 to 230,000 square miles
from 1978 to 1988, corresponding to a rate roughly one-half that of other recent
estimates. However, effects on biodiversity were found to be greater than
previously thought.
Item #d93jul3
"Behind the Scenes:
How Policy Making in the European Community, Japan and the United States Affects
Global Negotiations," R. Vernon (Intl. Affairs, Harvard Univ., Cambridge MA
02138), Environment, 35(5), 12-20, 35-43, June 1993.
Analyzes the policy making processes in the respective nations to shed light
on their negotiating styles and probable positions in the international
environmental arena.
Item #d93jul4
"UNCED: Mileposts
along the Road from Rio," M.A. Levy (Dept. Policy & Intl. Affairs,
Princeton Univ., Princeton NJ 08544), ibid., 4-5, 43-45.
A detailed survey of events and achievements since the Earth Summit,
including the roles of nongovernmental organizations and the Global Environment
Facility. Lists specific important documents generated.
Item #d93jul5
"Comparing
Greenhouse Gases for Policy Purposes," R. Schmalensee (Ctr. Energy &
Environ. Policy Res., Mass. Inst. Technol., Cambridge MA 02139), The Energy
J., 14(1), 245-256, 1993.
Presents an economic approach for the proper comparison of the discounted
marginal damages of emissions from different gases, which is necessary for
deriving optimal policies for greenhouse gas emission control but is not the
basis for the commonly used greenhouse warming potential.
Item #d93jul6
Special Section:
Agricultural Research, BioScience, 43(7), July-Aug. 1993.
Two of the articles pertain to climate change:
"International Agricultural Research for the Next Century," D.L.
Plucknett (Consultative Group on Intl. Agric. Res. (CGIAR), Washington, D.C.),
432-440. Discusses the work of CGIAR, comprising 18 centers including a newly
formed Centre for International Forestry Research, and its increased emphasis on
sustainable natural resource management.
"Methane Emission from Rice Fields," H.-U. Neue (Soil & Water
Div., Intl. Rice Res. Inst., Manila, The Philippines), 466-474. A combination of
feasible technologies should stabilize or reduce methane emissions while
increasing rice production.
