"Tropical Deforestation and Habitat Fragmentation in the Amazon: Satellite Data from 1978 to 1988," D. Skole (Inst. Earth Oceans Space, Univ. New Hampshire, Durham NH 03824), C. Tucker, Science, 260(5116), 1905-1910, June 25, 1993.

Sets of Landsat images taken one decade apart were used to measure deforestation, fragmented forest, and edge effects of adjacent deforestation. Deforestation in the Amazon Basin increased from 78,000 to 230,000 square miles from 1978 to 1988, corresponding to a rate roughly one-half that of other recent estimates. However, effects on biodiversity were found to be greater than previously thought.

Presents an economic approach for the proper comparison of the discounted marginal damages of emissions from different gases, which is necessary for deriving optimal policies for greenhouse gas emission control but is not the basis for the commonly used greenhouse warming potential.
