NEWS NOTES: BIOFUELS
Item #d93may97
"France Placates
Farmers with Plant Fuel Plan," T. Patel, New Scientist, p. 18, Feb.
27. Despite French and German (next article) studies concluding that growing
crops to produce fuels for vehicles is neither economically nor environmentally
justifiable, the French government is pursuing an expensive biofuels project
under pressure from the farm lobby.
Item #d93may98
"Rough Road Ahead for Biodiesel Fuel," C. Meyer, ibid., p.
19, Feb. 6. A study released by Germany's Federal Environmental Office (UBA)
concludes that there are cheaper and more effective ways of reducing greenhouse
gas emissions than by subsidizing the cultivation of rapeseed, a measure favored
by Europe's farmers.
