Several types of measurements by different groups in October point to record low amounts of stratospheric ozone in this year's Antarctic ozone hole. Although atmospheric levels of anthropogenic chlorine are continuing to increase, the 1993 ozone depletion is probably more a result of unusual weather conditions. The record low temperatures observed this year are favorable for the formation of polar stratospheric cloud particles, on which ozone-destroying reactions take place. Lingering particles from the Mount Pinatubo eruption may also be a factor.
