TROPICAL FORESTS
Item #d93nov123
An October
meeting at the United Nations failed to renew the International
Tropical Timber Agreement, which expires next March. Countries
that export tropical timber remain committed to the goal of
harvesting only sustainably managed forests by the year 2000, but
they want consumer countries, mostly in the north, to treat their
own forests the same way. The consumer countries are resisting
such a commitment. (See Intl. Environ. Rptr., p. 750, Oct.
20 1993; New Scientist, pp. 11 and 3, Oct. 23 1993. The
last reference is an editorial on the relationship of the timber
agreement to the biodiversity convention and the International
Forest Convention proposed unsuccessfully at the Earth Summit.
"Living in Harmony with the Forests" (ibid., pp.
11-12, Sep. 25) discusses the difficulties of defining
sustainable forestry. "Defining Sustainable Agriculture in
the Tropics" (Environ. Sci. Technol., pp. 1004-1006,
June) discusses a National Academy of Sciences report (Global
Climate Change Digest, p. 7, Oct.) that relates to forest
destruction.
