Item #d93nov132
CO2
increase stalls: Data presented by David Keeling at a meeting
last summer show a dramatic drop in the rate of increase of
atmospheric CO2 which seemed to coincide with the
eruption of Mount Pinatubo. This outcome may hold valuable
lessons on the carbon cycle, discussed by J.L. Sarmiento in Nature,
pp. 697-698, Oct. 21.
Item #d93nov133
Antarctic
ice: Glaciologists at a September meeting in Cambridge, UK,
discussed why an ice stream in the Antarctic has stopped moving.
(See ibid., pp. 608-609, Oct. 14 1993.) The problem also
interests climatologists because of implications for ice sheet
stability under climate change. A letter on the latter topic
appears ibid., p. 766, Aug. 26.
Item #d93nov134
Ocean
mixing: Recent field measurements confirm suspicions that
vertical mixing in the ocean occurs very slowly. (See Science
News, p. 117, Aug. 21 1993, and: "Variations in Snow on
Sea Ice: A Mechanism for Producing Climate Variations," T.S.
Ledley, ibid., 98(D6), 10,401-10,410, June 20,
1993).

priority themes: climate modeling and prediction, global
water and energy cycles, global carbon cycle, and
ecological systems and population dynamics. Application
deadline is Feb. 15. Contact Global Change Postdoctoral
Fellowships, Oak Ridge Inst. Sci. & Educ., POB 117,
Oak Ridge TN 37831 (615-576-9934).
