  • OF GENERAL INTEREST: COMMENTARY

Item #d94apr1

"Next Step for Climate Change Analysis," B. Bolin (Kvarnasvagen 6, 18451 Osterskar, Sweden), Nature, 368(6467), 94, Mar. 10, 1994.

The chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change solicits contributions for the organization's second assessment, to be published in September 1995. He discusses the problem of semi-popular articles on both extremes of the climate change issue, which are supposedly based on scientific findings.

Item #d94apr2

"The Hole Truth about CFCs," S.F. Singer, Chem. & Industry, p. 240 ff., Mar. 21, 1994.

Summarizes uncertainties which make the scientific basis of the CFC phaseout shaky; one of the latest is the recent laboratory finding that melanoma is mainly caused by UV-A, which is not affected by changes in the ozone layer.
