Report from a conference (Durham, N.C., Aug 1993). Describes actions necessary to change present worldwide trends, such as strengthening the understanding of the interactions of physical, chemical, biological, and socioeconomic systems, reducing poverty and stabilizing population, and transforming the economic system into one more benign. Suggests creation of GANN (a Global Array of Nested Networks) of individuals to accomplish these goals.

Gives recommendations of a special panel for modifying NASA research on this problem. A fleet of high-speed civil transport (HSCT) aircraft for stratospheric flight may now be technically feasible and economically advantageous, but a major concern is possible environmental consequences, particularly ozone depletion or redistribution and climate effects.

The former president of the National Academy of Sciences examines, in lay language, the seriousness of global warming and the ozone hole. He concludes that there is sound scientific evidence to doubt that we are in immediate danger in either case; there is ample time to carry out much more thorough research, and the cost to society of hasty action could be high.
