A detailed article in Energy, Econ. & Clim. Change (pp. 2-6, Dec.) describes progress by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Working Group III, on socioeconomic issues and emissions scenarios, as the IPCC prepares its second assessment report. It also discusses criticism, for example by the Global Commons Institute of London, that the work of the IPCC is dominated by the industrialized countries.

A feature article in Global Environ. Change Rep. (pp. 1-3, Nov. 24) discusses a review underway by Working Group I of the concept of global warming potentials, a scheme for comparing the relative impact of greenhouse gases as a basis for policy development.
