Global
average stratospheric ozone appears to be returning to more
normal levels from the record lows observed in 1992 and 1993,
according to satellite data from the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration. Researchers believe the June 1991 eruption
of Mount Pinatubo temporarily accelerated a slow decline in ozone
of about 2.5 percent per year, but its effect is dissipating.

A May 2 report from the Global Ozone Observing System of the
World Meteorological Organization said that record declines in
ozone were observed over Antarctica last fall. (See Intl.
