REPORTS... FINNISH RESEARCH PROGRAM
Item #d94may241
The
Finnish Research Program on Climate Change (SILMU) is a six year
program which began in 1990, emphasizing the quantification of
anticipated climatic changes, assessment of effects on
ecosystems, and development of mitigation and adaptation
strategies. It includes over 70 individual projects, ranging from
atmospheric chemistry to sociology, and involves over 180
scientists.
The following recent reports are available from The Academy of
Finland/SILMU, POB 57, 00551 Helsinki, Finland (fax: +358 0 7748
8299). In addition, information on SILMU can be obtained from
Internet, including abstracts of all projects and a complete
publications list. (Go to Finnish Gophers and to item 31, Academy
of Finland.)
Techniques for Developing Regional Climatic Scenarios for
Finland, T. Carter, E. Holopainen, M. Kanninen, Eds., 63 pp.,
1993. Documents and synthesizes presentations and discussion at
an international workshop on climatic scenarios in general
(Espoo, Finland, June 1993), organized by SILMU. Themes include
climate prediction, techniques of scenario construction, and the
use of scenarios in impact assessment. Application to Finland is
discussed.
Carbon Balance of the World's Forested Ecosystems: Towards
a Global Assessment, M. Kanninen, Ed., 271 pp., 1993.
Proceedings of a workshop (Joensuu, Finland, May 1992) held to
review the role of world forests in the carbon cycle, and to
discuss approaches for assessing the carbon cycle in forested
ecosystems and the exchange of CO2 and other greenhouse gases
between the atmosphere and forests.
The Finnish Research Programme on Climate Change. Second
Progress Report, M. Kanninen, P. Heikinheimo, Eds., June
1994. Comprises extended abstracts of current projects. (The
final report will be published in 1996.)
