Used two methodologies to assesss the consequences of doubled
CO2 over the next 60-70 years on the frequency and intensity of
tropical cyclones. Neither method showed any significant changes;
and although minor, indirect effects cannot be excluded, they
would be swamped by large natural variability.

Bond has proposed a mechanism involving the thermohaline ocean
circulation to explain the climatic warmings that typically
followed Heinrich events--recurrent depositions of ice-rafted
mineral debris apparently related to massive discharges of
icebergs. The authors test this idea with a simple ocean model
coupled to a model of a periodically surging ice sheet, and
reproduce the qualitative features of climate oscillations seen
in ice core and ocean records.

Differential absorption lidar measurements made from 1987 to
1993 at Hohenpeissenberg show an ozone decrease between 32 and 42
km that peaked at -1.7% at 39 km altitude. This depletion is
higher than reported by SAGE II or SBUV, but agrees well with
results from Umkehr measurements. The agreement with
photochemical models indicates the depletion is most likely
caused by catalytic ozone destruction through anthropogenic
chlorine.

Assembles observations made by more than 350 observers between
1610 and 1993 into a homogeneous record of sunspot activity,
revising the sunspot number reconstruction of Wolf in the 19th
century. Some trends differ significantly from Wolf's record.
