NEWS... DESERTIFICATION TREATY
Item #d94nov202
The
International Convention to Combat Desertification was signed by
about 100 countries during an October 14-15 ceremony in Paris.
Negotiated in June (GCCD, p. 16, July), the treaty
emphasizes projects at the local level to be financed by
developed countries, although such funding may be a diversion of
current foreign aid rather than additional support. The United
Nations considers desertification a significant potential
component of climate change. (See Intl. Environ. Rptr.,
pp. 841-842, Oct. 19; Global Environ. Change Rep., pp.
3-4, Oct. 28. The book section in this issue of GCCD
contains a subsection on desertification.)
