BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES: CARBONYL SULFIDE
Item #d95apr65
"Quantum Yield for Carbon Monoxide Production in the 248 nm
Photodissociation of Carbonyl Sulfide (OCS)," Z. Zhao (Sch.
Earth & Atmos. Sci., Georgia Tech, Atlanta GA 30332), R.E.
Stickel, P.H. Wine, Geophys. Res. Lett., 22(5),
615-618, Mar. 1, 1995.
Measurements suggest that the contribution of OCS as a
precursor to the lower stratospheric sulfate aerosol layer is
somewhat larger than previously thought.
Item #d95apr66
"Vertical Profile Measurements of Carbonylsulfide in the
Stratosphere," A. Engel (Forschungszentrum Jülich GMBH,
ICG-1, 52425 Jülich, Ger.), U. Schmidt, ibid., 21(20),
2219-2222, Oct. 1, 1994.
Measures COS for 17-30 km altitude, using whole air sampling
with subsequent gas chromatographic analysis. Calculates removal
in the stratosphere to be 69 ± 28 years. Comparing this number
to the estimated fluxes needed to sustain background H2SO4
aerosol confirms that most nonvolcanic aerosol is produced by the
oxidation of COS in the stratosphere.
Specialized Papers

Vortex," K.A. Kourtidis (M. Planck Inst. Aeron., POB 20,
D-37189 Katlenburg-Lindau, Ger.), R. Borchers et al., Geophys.
Res. Lett., 22(4), 393-396, Feb. 15, 1995.
Item #d95apr68
"Photoproduction of Carbonyl Sulfide in South Pacific Ocean
Waters as a Function of Irradiation Wavelength," P.S. Weiss
(Pacific Marine Environ. Lab., 7600 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle WA
98115), S.S. Andrews et al., ibid., 22(3), 215-218,
Feb. 1, 1995.
Item #d95apr69
"Factors Affecting the Photochemical Production of Carbonyl
Sulfide in Seawater," R.G. Zepp (Environ. Res. Lab., U.S.
EPA, Athens GA 30605), M.O. Andreae, ibid., 21(25),
2813-2816, Dec. 15, 1994.
