MANILA DECLARATION
Item #d95apr133
Representatives of 33 nations in the Asia-Pacific region signed a
statement in February that expressed concern over the
vulnerability of the region to the impacts of climate change, and
called for cooperation from the developed countries in mitigating
climate change. The declaration was drafted and signed at the
Asia-Pacific Leaders' conference, convened in the Philippines by
the Philippine Senate with support from the Climate Institute and
others. A major recommendation is an international public-private
partnership to accelerate applications of renewable and energy
efficiency technologies in developing countries. The statement
also specifies actions to be taken within the nations of the
region, such as the development of national action plans. The
Manila Declaration was expected to be presented at the first
conference of parties to the climate convention in Berlin.
The January-February issue of the Climate Institute newsletter Climate
Alert is devoted to the conference, and includes the full
texts of addresses made there by Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir
Bhutto and Philippine President Fidel Ramos. Contact Climate
