Item #d95aug71
"Plundering the Boreal Forests," A. Acharya, World Watch,
21-29, May-June 1995.
Boreal forests of the far north are disappearing at least as rapidly as
tropical forests. As in the tropics, logging involves mismanagement of natural
wealth, threatens indigenous cultures, and degrades the biodiversity of large
areas. One of the biggest benefits of the boreal ecosystem is the enormous
amount of carbon that it stores.
Item #d95aug72
"Are Sarawak's Forests Sustainable?" F. Pearce, New
Scientist, 28-31, Nov. 26, 1994.
Despite the industry's claims to the contrary, timber companies in the
Malaysian state of Sarawak are harvesting more than twice as much timber as they
should, in what many regard as the world's most unsustainable timber operation.
