A Guide to Information on Greenhouse Gases and Ozone Depletion
Published July 1988 through June 1999
FROM VOLUME 8, NUMBER 2, FEBRUARY 1995
"Atmospheric Wet Deposition of Nutrient Elements:
Correlation with Harmful Biological Blooms in Northwest Pacific
Coastal Zones," (see PROF. PUBS./GEN. INTEREST).
Microbial Turnover of Carbon in the Deep-Sea Environment,"
H.W. Jannasch (Woods Hole Oceanog. Inst., Woods Hole MA 02543), Global
& Planetary Change, 9(3-4), 289-295, Dec. 1994.
A background paper for the First International Workshop on
Interaction of CO2 and the Ocean. Covers the
constraints of metabolism and growth by carbon limitation,
temperature and pressure; the existence of background or
threshold concentrations of readily metabolizable organic carbon;
and the production of organic carbon by chemosynthesis fueled by
terrestrial energy and its subsequent turnover to CO2.
"Proxy Paradox for P-Prediction," K.C. Ruttenberg
(addr. immed. above), Nature, 372(6503), 224-225,
Nov. 17, 1994.
Over geological timescales, the sole significant source of
phosphorus to the oceans is erosion of continental crustal
material transported by rivers. Cites observations by Filippelli
and Delaney that are reported in Paleoceanography
regarding chemical proxies used to estimate P weathering.
Line in the Sea," J.A. Yoder (Grad. Sch. Oceanog., Univ.
Rhode Island, S. Ferry Rd., Narragansett RI 02882), S.G. Ackleson
et al., ibid., 371(6499), 689-692, Oct. 20, 1994.
Presents photographs and measurements which show dramatic
biological responses to circulation and mixing processes
associated with an open-ocean front between cold, upwelled waters
and warmer waters. High phytoplankton biomass and primary
production associated with diatom patches may explain high animal
abundance along such a frontal boundary.
"Isotopic Evidence for Reduced Productivity in the Glacial
Southern Ocean," A. Shemesh, S.A. Macko et al., Science, 262(5132),
Oct. 15, 1993. (See Global Climate Change Digest, July
"Testing the Iron Hypothesis in Ecosystems of the Equatorial
Pacific Ocean," J.H. Martin, K.H. Coale et al., Nature, 371(6493),
123-129, Sep. 8, 1994. (See Global Climate Change Digest,
"Solubilities of Al, Pb, Cu, and Zn in Rain Sampled in the
Marine Environment over the North Atlantic Ocean and
Mediterranean Sea," B. Lim (Sch. Environ. Sci., Univ. E.
Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ, UK), T.D. Jickells et al., Global
Biogeochem. Cycles, 8(3), 349-362, Sep. 1994.
The use of trace metal solubilities for assessing dissolved
atmospheric trace metal wet deposition fluxes and their effects
on surface ocean biogeochemistry should be constrained by taking
rainwater pH into account in future global model estimates.
"Zinc and Carbon Co-limitation of Marine
Phytoplankton," F.M.M. Morel, J.R. Reinfelder et al., Nature, 369(6483),
740-742, June 30, 1994. (See Global Climate Change Digest,

Matter in the Ocean," R.M.W. Amon, R. Benner, Nature, 369(6481),

Sea," K.R. Arrigo (NASA-Goddard, Greenbelt MD 20771), C.R.
McClain, Science, 266(5183), 261-263, Oct. 14,
"Nitrogen Uptake, Dissolved Organic Nitrogen Release, and
New Production," D.A. Bronk (Dept. Marine Sci., Univ.
Georgia, Athens GA 30602), P.M. Gilbert, B.B. Ward, ibid., 265(5180),
1843-1846, Sep. 23, 1994.

Using Optical Mooring Data," K.J. Waters (Jt. Inst. Mar.
& Atmos. Res., Univ. Hawaii, 1000 Pope Rd., Honolulu HI

Trap Fluxes," K.O. Buesseler (Woods Hole Oceanog. Inst.,
Woods Hole MA 02543), A.F. Michaels et al., Global Biogeochem.
Cycles, 8(2), 179-193, June 1994.
