Discusses formation of N₂O in soils, methods for measuring emissions, and properties and processes of soils that affect N₂O emissions. Estimates N₂O fluxes and contributions to the global atmospheric N₂O budget. Concludes with suggestions for decreasing emissions through agricultural practices.

Reviewed by M.K. Cleaveland in Bull. Amer. Meteor. Soc., pp. 768-769, May 1995. Contains 30 papers about the Maunder Minimum. Describes the EURO-CLIMHIST paleoclimate database that incorporates early instrumental data, proxy data such as tree rings, and documentary sources such as Danish nautical records. The papers show little support for the late Maunder Minimum as a time of unrelieved cold. Instead, it seems to have been a time of highly variable climate.
