atmosphere due to agriculture. Discusses formation of N2O in soils, methods for
measuring emissions, and properties and processes of soils that affect N2O
emissions. Estimates N2O fluxes and contributions to the global atmospheric N2O

Pfister, B. Gläser, 479 pp., 1994, $95 (Gustave Fischer Verlag).
Reviewed by M.K. Cleaveland in Bull. Amer. Meteor. Soc., pp.
768-769, May 1995. Contains 30 papers about the Maunder Minimum. Describes the
EURO-CLIMHIST paleoclimate database that incorporates early instrumental data,
proxy data such as tree rings, and documentary sources such as Danish nautical
records. The papers show little support for the late Maunder Minimum as a time
of unrelieved cold. Instead, it seems to have been a time of highly variable
climate.
