Environmental Indicators: A Systematic Approach to Measuring and
Reporting on Environmental Policy Performance in the Context of Sustainable
Development, A. Hammond, A. Adriaanse et al., 51 pp., May 1995, $13.50
Policy-making suffers not only because of a lack of information, but also
because accurate information does not reach the right people. Economic and
social indicators already influence policy, but what is needed is a set of
simple and unambiguous signals of how human activities are affecting the
environment. This report shows how they could be constructed and gives examples
including those on climate change and ozone depletion.

the interim financial mechanism. Develops a Capacity Building Requirements Table
that could be a valuable tool in designing and evaluating projects on

Urban Travel and Sustainable Development, 238 pp., 1995,
The main conclusion of a three-year study by OECD and the European
Conference of Ministers of Transport is that car dependency in cities can be
reduced only by integrated approaches using mutually-reinforcing measures. Of a
three-component policy package proposed, the most important is sustainable
development, achieved through a mix of fuel and road pricing, traffic restraint,
and land-use planning.
