JOINT IMPLEMENTATION & EMISSION OFFSETS
Item #d96sep71
"U.S. Utility
Group Funds Five Offset Projects," Global Environ. Change Rep., p.
7, Aug. 23, 1996. The UtiliTree Carbon Company, a nonprofit organization
representing 40 electric companies, is funding forest projects expected to
reduce atmospheric CO2 by the equivalent of more than 2 million tons
over 40-100 years, at a cost of about $1 per ton. Two of the projects are
located outside the U.S. in Malaysia and Belize; the other three are domestic.

Item #d96sep72
"Canadian Energy
Firm Looks to Offsets," ibid., pp. 1-3, June 28. An alliance of
leading Canadian energy firms recently announced the formation of the Greenhouse
Emissions Management Consortium (GEMCo) to manage carbon emission offset
activities for participating companies. This development reflects a growing
perception in the energy industry that the climate change issue is a source of
business risk despite scientific uncertainty. For more information contact
Aldyen Donnelly of GEMCo (604 691 5066).
Item #d96sep73
"WBCSD Launches
Search for JI Projects," ibid., p. 7, Mar. 22. The World Council
for Sustainable Business Development would like to match joint implementation
projects with potential investors and carbon buyers, and involve international
financial organizations like the World Bank and the Global Environment Facility.
The Council will help companies develop workable project proposals that they can
negotiate with other interested parties. Contact WBCSD, 160 Route de Florissant,
