Climate
protection institute: Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Columbia University,
with funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, have created a new
international research institute to provide early warning of El Niņo and other types of
climate variability that influence destructive weather patterns. It will gather a diverse
group of natural and social scientists to translate climatological research into
beneficial socio-economic strategies, and distribute climate predictions several months to
a year in advance, to a global network of agencies and policymakers. For details see the
April 1, 1997, Columbia University news release at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/pr/19074.html.
