Bank Fund Finds Allies and Skeptics," E. Masood, Nature, p.
7, Nov. 6, 1997. The World Bank has offered to set up and manage a Global
Carbon Initiative as a mechanism for joint implementation. Developed
countries would pay for low-cost, energy-efficient projects in developing
countries. But developing countries and some non-governmental groups have
yet to be convinced of the scheme's merits.

Rep., p. 7, Oct. 24, 1997. The Royal Dutch/Shell Group will follow the
lead of British Petroleum, which earlier this year announced plans to
increase its sales of solar products tenfold over the next decade.

1997. In April 1998, the British energy market will be the first in the
world to be opened to full competition. The success of renewable energy in
the free market will depend on whether people can be persuaded to pay more
for green energy. The Worldwide Fund for Nature is developing criteria and
auditing systems for certifying green electricity, a complicated process.

Fuel Set for Takeoff," D. Charles, New Scientist, p. 25, Mar.
22, 1997. A hydrogen-powered plane could be flying by the end of the
century. Being developed by Daimler-Benz Aerospace Airbus, it will
eliminate CO2 emissions and produce fewer (ozone-destroying)
nitrogen oxides than conventional aircraft.
