Item #d97jun81

Warming and lake acidity: Austrian researchers find that many high-altitude lakes in the Alps have become more alkaline and attribute the change to warmer temperatures, concluding that climate affects such lakes more than acidic deposition. (See Sommaruga-Wögrath paper in PROF. PUBS./GEN. INTEREST & COMMENTARY, this Global Climate Change Digest issue--June 1997; also Chem. & Industry, p. 329, May 5.)

Item #d97jun82

Valuing ecosystems: A pioneering effort to attach a monetary value to the services provided by the world's ecosystems, such as climate control, is reported by Costanza et al. in Nature. (See PROF. PUBS./GEN. INTEREST & COMMENTARY, this Global Climate Change Digest issue--June 1997; Science News, p. 303, May 17; New Scientist, p. 11, May 17. The policy impact of this estimate is discussed in Intl. Environ. Rptr., p. 544, May 28.)
