The annual climate
summary of the World Meteorological Organization published April 29 calls 1996
the eighth warmest year on record since 1860, and the 18th consecutive year the
world has warmed. This result, based on surface measurements on land and ocean,
is consistent with earlier estimates. (See Global Climate Change Digest,
NEWS, Mar. 1997.) The report also highlights various weather and climate
extremes for the globe and by region.
