Global Climate Change Digest A Guide to Information on Greenhouse Gases and Ozone Depletion Published July 1988 through June 1999
FROM VOLUME 10, NUMBER 11, NOVEMBER 1997NEWS... NEWS NOTES
Item #d97nov91
Canadian
impacts and adaptation are the focus of a cooperative study organized
by Environment Canada. (See REPORTS/CANADA, this Global Climate Change
Digest issue--Nov. 1997.) Key findings were released at a late
November conference.
Item #d97nov92
Energy
R&D spending in the U.S. on efficient and renewable technologies
should be boosted by $1.1 billion over six years, according to a report
released in October by an advisory committee to President Clinton. (See
Science, p. 216, Oct. 10, 1997.)
Item #d97nov93
Rainforest
fires: The recent forest fires of Indonesia are the result of climatic
conditions caused by El Niņo combined with governmental policies on
land clearing. (See New Scientist, pp. 3-4, Oct. 4, 1997.) A team
of scientists have concluded that the burning of Indonesian peat bogs
could release more CO2 into the atmosphere over the next six
months than all the power stations and cars of Western Europe emit in a
year (ibid., p. 22, Oct. 18). The same El Niņo conditions
are also increasing fires in South America (ibid., p. 10, Oct.
11).
Item #d97nov94
Coal
mine fires in northern China could be contributing up to three percent
of worldwide emissions of CO2. (See New Scientist, p.
14, Aug. 9, 1997.) The Netherlands Organization of Applied Scientific
Research is providing technical assistance in controlling the fires.
