Global Climate Change Education Resources
Part 2. In-Depth Global-Change Resources
Environmental education is an important aspect of the education system
in the United States and elsewhere. The topics related to global
environmental change represent an interesting challenge to educators
seeking to provide balanced coverage of the issue. Coverage goes beyond
the physical and applied sciences and includes discussion from the policy
and social sciences, as well.
GCC Education Resources
These groups provide more in-depth subject coverage of climate-change
education resources than the general environmental education resources
listed in Part 1 (Global Climate Change Digest, November 1998) of
this column.
Center for Earth Observing and Space Research
Provides data and information resources from NASAs Earth Observing
System (EOS) beyond the traditional audiences of researchers and brings
these science-based resources to teachers and educators at all levels from
middle school through college. For additional NASA education resources,
see NASAs Online Educational Resources site at
http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/OER/
(a tremendous site for teachers).
Climate Solutions: Growth with Less Energy
This site looks at achieving the reduction of greenhouse gases to stop
the warming of the global climate. It provides links to discuss the
science, business, and policies related to global climate change.
College and University Global Change Courses
The course descriptions, syllabi, and course home pages listed here
demonstrate the range of global-environmental- change studies available at
colleges and universities. More than 70 individual classes were listed at
the end of December 1998.
Destination Earth
The official Web site of NASAs Earth Science Enterprise, a
comprehensive education initiative to increase students knowledge
about the sciences related to the Earth. Earth Science Enterprise (NASA)
http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/mtpe/edreports.html
reviews various NASA education products related to Earth science or
Earth-observation technology. Includes links to full-text copies of ESE
Education Reports (overviews) beginning with May 1995.
Earth Science Resources: Geology, Oceanography, Astronomy, and Ecology
Provides resource links for educators on many topics related to global
environmental change.
EarthSense
A hydrology and remote-sensing education project for the K-12 Earth
science education community.
Electronic Mailing Lists for Global and Environmental Change Education
Six discussion lists compiled by the Global Change Research Information
Office (GCRIO).
GCDIS: Educational Resources
An inventory of more than 30 education sites for global-change studies.
Accessed from the GCDIS Home Page http://www.gcdis.usgcrp.gov/
and clicking on the Educational Resources box. Includes several very good
resources for geographic- and cartographic-education resources.
GCRIO Unit Lesson Plans
Unit One: International Environmental Treaties for Conserving Biological
Diversity (high school and college level). This unit introduces biological
diversity and the importance of international environmental treaties in
sustainable living. Students can experience the decision-making process
involved in the development and implementation of environmental
conventions; develop ecological literacy; and see the need for science in
consideration of global environmental issues. Teachers can access an
online biodiversity module that provides an overview, glossary, facts,
activities, additional resources, hands-on exercises, and minds-on
discussion topics.
The Global Change Game
Played on a world map the size of a basketball court. A great learning
activity that stimulates creative problem-solving and critical thinking
strategies.
Global Change and Environmental Education Resources
A multidisciplinary and international collection of resources
representing a wide range of resources in a variety of formats for
educators and students at all levels (K-12 and higher education),
librarians, citizens, and community groups.
Global Change and Stability
- [By July 2000 this site had been moved and could not be located.]
Produced by the Virginia Sea Grant Global Change Education Program, this
site includes An Educators Page with links to teaching resources,
lesson plans, and activities. Student global-change papers are presented,
and a Global Change and Sustainability Index with reading lists,
overviews, and fact sheets is provided. Sea Grant regional global- change
education programs are provided for the Mid-Atlantic states [Delaware,
Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia,
and Tennessee (however, West Virginia and Tennessee have no links as of
December 1998)] and the states bordering the Great Lakes (Illinois,
Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin;
see http://www.great-lakes.net/education/educate.html
for a comprehensive inventory of Sea Grant Education Programs in the Great
Lakes Region).
Global Climate: A Resource for Education
The Scatterometer Program Office is committed to meeting the increasing
requests for educational resources about NASAs Space and Earth
Science activities. Through SeaWinds Educational Outreach Program,
several new products are being developed for release in Spring 1999. These
products will feature updated multidisciplinary curricula on global
climate in conjunction with behind-the-scenes news and stories from the
SeaWinds projects.
Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE)
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
supports the GLOBE Program, a worldwide network of K-12 students,
scientists, and teachers working together to learn more about the global
environment.
Global Warming: Focus on the Future
This is a minitour of the full global-warming exhibit on permanent
display at the Biosphere 2 Center outside Tucson, Arizona. A rather
extensive inventory of resources.
Global Warming and Climate Change
This brochure was prepared by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University
to explain the issue of global warming and climate change. Provides
background information for teachers at all levels.
Institute for Global Change Research and Education
The Institute for Global Change Research and Education (IGCRE), located
at the Global Hydrology and Climate Center, is an institution jointly
operated by the University of Alabama at Huntsville and Universities Space
Research Association. IGCRE collaborates with the NASA/Marshall Space
Flight Centers Earth System Science Division to focus on advancing
the understanding of the role of water and energy in the dynamics of
global change. In addition, the Institute is integrating research with the
educational needs of Earth-system and global-change science, including
those at the precollege level, to convey the importance and exciting
challenges of global-change science
International Research Institute for Climate Prediction
Acting under a cooperative agreement with NOAAs Office of Global
Programs, Columbia Universitys Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, in
collaboration with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, has undertaken
the establishment of an International Research Institute (IRI) to provide
experimental climate-forecast guidance on seasonal-to-interannual time
scales for use by affected communities around the world.
ITS ELEMENTARY!
A teacher designed this web site specifically for teachers to access,
view, and print lessons during one planning period using their schools
Internet connection. For K-8 teachers.
JASON Project
A comprehensive environmental-change project based on scientific inquiry
and the thrill of exploration. Resources and programs for teachers and
students.
Supportive Scientific Visualization Environments for Education
(SsciVEE) Project
Scientific visualization has had a tremendous impact on the practice of
science during the past decade by capitalizing on the power of the human
visual-perception system to identify patterns in complex data. The SsciVEE
project is exploring the potential of this technology to improve science
education in similar ways.
A Weather Page for Kids, Teachers, and Parents
Listings of resources and activities for children to use to explore
weather and increase their interest and understanding of science with
projects for the classroom and home.
