Analysis of hourly tide-gauge records from Atlantic City and Charleston shows interdecadal variation of storminess, but no long-term trend in storm activity or severity during the 20th century. Results suggest, but do not prove conclusively, a lack of response to global warming along the U.S. Atlantic coast during this century.

Uses a cyclone-model-based weather classification system to identify long-term trends over the period 1961-1989. Results suggest that days dominated by mid-latitude cold-season anticyclones of continental origin have decreased in frequency; those of Pacific origin have become more common.
